Courgette
A generous, fast‑growing summer crop. One or two plants will easily feed a family. Likes rich soil, sun and plenty of water.
Things to look out for
- Pick small and often — marrow‑sized fruits slow the plant down
- Water the soil, not the leaves, to reduce mildew
- Give plenty of space — leaves get big quickly
What to sow
Sow seeds on their side in small pots indoors on a warm windowsill. Keep at room temperature and water lightly.
UK window: Apr–May (indoors)
What to plant out
Harden off for a week, then plant out when nights are mild. Give each plant a square metre of space and dig in plenty of compost.
UK window: May–Jun (after frost)
How to care
Water deeply at the base of the plant once a week (more in dry spells). Once fruits start, give a tomato‑style feed every couple of weeks.
When to harvest
Pick fruits young at 10–15 cm — picking often keeps more coming. Check plants every 2–3 days in summer.
UK window: Jul–Oct
