Fennel
Crunchy, anise‑flavoured bulbs (Florence fennel). Likes sun and steady moisture; hot, dry spells can make it “bolt”.
Things to look out for
- Hot, dry spells can cause bolting — water regularly
- Give each plant space so bulbs can swell
- Earth up bulbs lightly to keep them pale
What to sow
Sow outside in shallow lines or start a few seeds in small pots. Keep soil damp. Thin or pot on so plants have space.
UK window: Apr–Jul (direct or modules)
What to plant out
If started in pots, move outside once plants are sturdy and nights are mild. Plant gently to avoid root damage.
UK window: May–Jun
How to care
Water well in dry weather. As bulbs swell, pull a little soil around them to keep them pale and tender.
When to harvest
Cut bulbs when they reach about tennis‑ball size. Use feathery leaves as a herb.
UK window: Jul–Oct
