Garlic
Easy crop for cool weather. Plant individual cloves in autumn; they grow over winter and are ready next summer.
Things to look out for
- Avoid planting in very wet ground — cloves may rot
- Rotate beds; don’t plant after onions/garlic to reduce disease risk
- Lift gently to avoid bruising bulbs
What to sow
No seeds needed — use garlic bulbs. Split into cloves just before planting.
UK window: —
What to plant out
Plant each clove pointy end up, about a thumb deep and 10–15 cm apart, rows 25–30 cm apart.
UK window: Sep–Nov
How to care
Keep weed‑free. Water during dry spells in spring. Stop watering once bulbs swell and leaves begin to yellow.
When to harvest
Lift when most leaves have turned yellow/brown. Dry (“cure”) somewhere airy before storing.
UK window: Jun–Jul
