Strawberry

Sweet summer berries from low, leafy plants. Grow in beds, pots or hanging baskets in a sunny spot.

Things to look out for

  • Net against birds before berries start to ripen
  • Mulch with straw to keep fruit off wet soil
  • Replace plants every 3–4 years as crops drop off

What to sow

Strawberries are not usually grown from seed — start with bare‑root runners or small potted plants from a garden centre.

UK window: —

What to plant out

Plant so the crown (where leaves meet roots) sits just at soil level — too deep and it rots, too shallow and it dries out. Space ~30 cm apart.

UK window: Mar–Apr or Sep–Oct

How to care

Water at the base of plants, not over the leaves. Mulch with straw once flowers appear to keep berries clean. Net against birds as fruits ripen.

When to harvest

Pick when berries are fully red and come away easily with the green top still attached. Eat or use the same day for the best flavour.

UK window: Jun–Aug
