Tomato
Loves warm sunshine. In the UK, grow in a greenhouse or a sheltered, sunny spot. Give each plant a stick to grow up.
Things to look out for
- Water regularly so fruits don’t split
- Watch for tiny bugs like greenfly on new leaves
- Give plants space and remove crowded leaves so air can move
What to sow
Sow seeds indoors in small pots on a warm, sunny windowsill. Move to a bigger pot when roots fill the small one.
UK window: Feb–Mar (indoors)
What to plant out
Let plants get used to outside for about a week, then plant outside when nights are no longer cold. Plant a little deeper and tie to a stick.
UK window: May–Jun (after frost)
How to care
Gently tie stems to the stick as they grow. Pinch off small shoots that grow between the main stem and leaves. Water little and often so fruits don’t split. Once flowers appear, give tomato food once a week.
When to harvest
Pick when the fruit is fully coloured and slightly soft. Picking often helps more fruit to grow.
UK window: Jul–Oct
